S&S 10th Anniversary!

We can’t believe it, but it’s the 10th Anniversary of Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP! It’s been a wild ten years since the collaborative efforts between Superbrothers, Jim Guthrie, and CAPY, and the game still holds a special place in all of our hearts! We gathered some thoughts from CAPY devs on what Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery means to them, which you can read here.

Stay tuned for other S&S 10th Anniversary celebrations via Superbrother’s Twitter, as well as Craig Adams’s Twitter, and as always, keep an eye on the S&S hashtags, #sworcery and #cosmicfriendsforever

Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery Retrospective

It may sound a bit bonkers, but it’s been 10 whole years since Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP first launched on iPhone! I had a chance over the holidays to visit Mingi Taw and hang out with my ol’ brooding buddy the Scythian, and we couldn’t help but reminisce…

Let’s look back at some of the weird & wonderful things that Capy, Superbrothers and Jim Guthrie got up to along the way, shall we?

You may be aware that Sworcery’s magical soundtrack came out on a variety of amazing vinyls, but did you know Jim Guthrie also released it on cassette? And long before cassettes became cool, too! Jim just had a real love for those rolls of tape wrapped in hunks of plastic! Quite a rare Sworcery artifact, if you can find it!

Then there was the time we teamed up with their friends at 8–4 to bring Sworcery to Japan, along with an amazing album of remixes by some truly legendary Japanese composers:

Sworcery’s Japanese title was SUKIMUSU… which sorta vaguely translates to something like “magical musical love journey” I think…?

We even put on a live concert inside a theater at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival Theater, with Jim Guthrie leading a hefty troupe of musicians. It was a once-in-a-lifetime event, so much so that there isn’t even a recording of it!

Heck, we even made a Sworcery racing game!?!

There are so many Sworcery memories over the past decade…but one of the things that makes us feel the most feels is how much love we’ve received from all of the fans that played the game over the years. To this day, we still receive incredible fan art and see little hints of Sworcery vibes and inspiration in many indie games big and small. It’s so nice to see that something we created made a big enough splash to send out long-lasting ripples.

There’s no better example of this than all of the fan art we’ve collected on our Tumblr: #Sworcery Vibes. There’ so much cool stuff on that Tumblr, including gorgeous pieces by our very own Kelly Smith and Vic Nguyen:

I highly recommend grabbing a warm cup of coco and exploring this particularly deep Sworcery rabbit hole!

Well… that’s a lot of Sworcery, but I suppose it is the 10 Year Anniversary, which is sort of a big deal, right? Can’t help but get a bit choked up by it all…

Hmm… that actually reminds me: Maybe I should boot up my Nintendo Switch and replay Sworcery?

SUPER TIME FORCE

We checked in with the leader of the Super Time Force, Commander Repeatski.

Dateline: Spacebus, March 18th, 2021

Happy Spring citizens of Earth! What have y’all been up to lately? Since, oh about last March, the Super Time Force has been on some training missions in the distant-past and far-flung-future so I’m not really caught up on the present-day goingsons. Anything interesting happening we should know about? I’m sure you’re all just shaking off the winter blah’s by gathering in large groups to share your excitement for the changing of the seasons. Spring is also the perfect time to attend large outdoor music festivals, or start visiting amusement parks, or maybe enjoy a meal on a packed restaurant patio. Hunkering down for those few winter months can often leave one feeling isolated, so I say: Treat yourself to the company of your fellow man! Get out there and celebrate life with as many people as you can! Throw a spring dinner party and invite loads of people! I hear foam parties are cool, maybe go to one of those! Or try gathering all your friends and family into a big conga line or a massage-circle and rub out the winter kinks from each other’s muscles. Tank up on lots of human-to-human connections! Go hug a perfect stranger! Ooh I have a fun idea: go to a packed Farmer’s Market and buy some fresh produce and then play a game where you each eat something and then breathe into each other’s face and see if you can guess what they ate! Is that a pear you smell or a snap pea? Don’t worry the winter cold season is over so huffing your friend’s warm breath is totally safe! Anyway get out there and live it up together because that’s what spring is all about: rejuvenation and establishing a connection to life!

SPRING HAS SPRUNG!

Does … does he not know about the multiverse pandemic happening right now?

GRINDSTONE

Given HjellHjole’s prospensity for either old gods or no gods, I wasn’t expecting to really receive anything of note from those industrious barbarians regarding Easter. But, uh, once again, those HjellHjolians have proved me wrong. Lagr, owner of the Howling Wolf Inn, sent me this note and told me it’s an “Easter Warning”, whatever the heck that means.

I heard this from a customer who heard it from a friend of a friend. Apparently, back in the old days of Grindstone Mountain, when stonegrinding was more likely to end with a chopped off toe than a grindstone, there were rumours of an abandoned field. Like, lush, Highlands type field. Not exactly the sort of terrain you’d expect to see on a mountain, especially a frozen one. So this friend of a friend of a customer decided to check it out. “I believe in flesh eating monsters, but grass? Actual grass? Now that I’ll have to see to believe,” they said. So they got a little expedition ready and started their way up the mountain, alone. Nobody else wanted to bother with it because, to be honest, nobody really gives two flying batskis about grass.

So they were naturally alone when supposedly they did find the grassy plain on Grindstone Mountain. Except it wasn’t even close to what they were expecting. Who knows what they were expecting — maybe something ridiculous like, rainbows, unicorns, or, pfft, sunlight?? Anyways, apparently, what they did see was a field of blood-soaked grass and in the dead centre of this otherwise-empty field was an Easter bunny, smiling and staring directly at them. After a minute, it waved, and ducked beneath the tall grass, disappearing entirely.

Well, they took off running and running and when they finally made it back to HjellHjole, not a single person would believe them. I mean, to be clear: people believed there was an ominous bunny living on Grindstone Mountain. They just didn’t believe there was that much grass up there.

Anyways, that person died a day later. Choked on a tiny easter egg. Weird, huh?

Thanks for the nightmares, Lagr.
